GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (AP) _ The mayor of Grand Island has been convicted of reckless driving in his suspected drunken-driving case.

Mayor Jay Vavricek pleaded no contest in Howard County Court on Wednesday and was fined $500. Vavricek had made a plea deal with prosecutors. Howard County Attorney David Schroeder says the agreement was consistent with the policies of his office. Schroeder says Vavricek's criminal history showed only a speeding ticket he received about three years ago. Vavricek was stopped on U.S. Highway 281 on March 2 following a witness report about a suspected drunken driver. A law officer says he observed Vavricek driving on the shoulder of the road. The 59-year-old Vavricek's blood later tested out a little over the legal limit.
