Fake money scam hits York area

Posted: Updated:

YORK, Neb. (AP) York police are investigating two check scams in which the thieves steal data from the checks so the thieves can make fakes for cashing.

Police think two groups of thieves are working in the York area. One targets individuals, the other targets businesses.

Police Sgt. Mike Hanke says the thieves somehow get account information off legitimate checks and then create new, fraudulent checks that they try to cash at banks or use to buy goods at stores.      Hanke says people and businesses should check for money missing from their accounts even though their checks haven't been stolen.

York police are working with other agencies and departments to investigate the crimes.
