The sheriff's office says 13-year-old Emma Kringle has died from her injuries.

The Lancaster County Sheriff's Office says Emma and her 9-year-old cousin were riding ATV's Saturday afternoon, when her hair got caught in the engine.  It happened at her grandparent's house near Northwest 140th Street.

Sheriff Terry Wagner says Emma was wearing a helmet while riding a home–built 3–wheel ATV that was sturdy and safe.

"It was a substantial 3-wheel ATV, had been ridden for many years at the grandparents' acreage and this was just a terrible tragic accident that occurred," Sheriff Wagner said.

She was airlifted to Bryan West.  A hospital spokesman on behalf of the Kringle family said she passed away from head injuries sustained during the accident.  Emma was a student at Waverly Middle School.

Emma Kringle was a student at Waverly Middle School and school administrators say she was a joyful student who gave her best effort each and every day.

In a statement released by the school's superintendent, he expressed his deep sadness for the loss.

"On a typical school day, our buildings are filled with energy and excitement, and Emma was a part of that environment. Each day we have the opportunity to play a part in a student's growth and learning, but today Waverly Middle School is filled with a sense of sadness due to the loss of Emma," Bill Heimann said.

The school's crisis team will provide support to students and staff to help mourn the loss of Emma.

A fund has been set up at Pinnacle Bank in Emma's name.
