SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb (AP) _ More state troopers and sheriff's deputies will be on state highways and roads in western Nebraska in the coming weeks in an effort to keep drunken drivers off the road.

The Nebraska State Patrol and Scottsbluff County Sheriff's Office will conduct the joint effort in and around Scottsbluff County starting this month. The special enforcement will continue through June, with troopers and deputies conducting nighttime vehicle checks and high-visibility patrols.

Funding for the extra patrols comes from a grant through the Nebraska Office of Highway Safety.

Scottsbluff County officials say that within the last year, the county has had eight fatality crashes, four of which involved either alcohol or drug-impaired drivers.
