Man arrested for having gun, not for shooting dog

The Lancaster County Sheriff's Office says Russell Dlouhy shot and killed a dog that had pounced on a young boy.

Chief Deputy Jeff Bliemeister says, however, Dlouhy is a convicted felon, and is not allowed to possess a firearm.  On March 30, Bliemeister says a black retriever mix ran onto Dlouhy's property and pounced on the 11-year-old who was living there.  He says Dlouhy came outside with a rifle to scare off the dog, but it continued to be aggressive.  That's when he shot and killed the dog.  Bliemeister said Dlouhy was just protecting the child and himself.

The sheriff's office says Dlouhy was convicted in an attempted domestic assault case in 2010, therefore he cannot possess a firearm.  He was arrested Thursday, after the sheriff's office searched property near 41st and N streets in Lincoln and found the gun used to shoot the dog.  He was arrested for being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm.

    Gun shots near 18th and G Streets

    Lincoln Police say that five to six gunshots were heard near the 1800 block of G Street. Witnesses say they heard loud shouting between a group of people at Lewis Field, followed by the firing of the weapon, a little before midnight Saturday.
