The night began as a get-together at Michael Arellano's home, but when morning came, it was a crime scene. It comes after the fatal shooting of 38-year Shane Newman. The father of the suspect in connection with the shooting spoke to Channel 8. "I just wanted to apologize, first to Shane's family for his loss. Shane was a good friend of mine. We used to play on a pool league and stuff together. From my family to his we apologize. This is a very bad moment for everybody involved," Arellano said.
The shooting happened early Saturday morning. Officials said Newman was shot and killed. Police arrested 21-year-old Michael Arellano in connection with the shooting. Details to what led up to the shooting are still being investigated. "It's surreal. I'm really at a loss for words. I don't know what to think or feel. Like I said, very bad for both families," Arellano said.
The father said Saturday night was just like any other night. He said he was completely shocked when he heard the news of the shooting the next morning. He said his son and Shane were friends. "Anybody that has ever met Michael knows that he'd do anything for anyone. He's a very kind-heart, intelligent, young man," Arellano said.
At a news conference Monday morning, Lincoln Police Chief Jim Peschong said Arellano was arrested after he returned to the party and police found a gun in his car. In court documents, Arellano told police the gun was given to him, and he originally hid it. Peschong said they believe Arellano is responsible for the shooting, however, the county attorney will determine the charges. He's expected to appear in court Tuesday.
