The Pinnacle Bank Arena is no doubt destined to be a basketball Mecca in the state of Nebraska. Husker men's tickets have already sold out.
But, what about hockey? Wednesday, arena officials tested out that idea.
"If UNL makes a decision they want a hockey team, we're ready for them," arena Director of Operations, IJ Rosenblum, said.
On Wednesday, arena officials gave a tour of the arena floor, turned into an ice rink; three-quarters of an inch of NHL regulation size ice.
Of course, this is just a test. The Pinnacle Bank Arena doesn't own an ice making machine, or even a Zamboni, for that matter. However, it's a test that worked.
"Everything worked just like we wanted it to," Rosenblum said.
He says the arena hopes to entice shows like "Disney on Ice," and possibly an NHL exhibition game. Both would require the installation of a temporary ice system.
But if there's something more permanent, like a semi-pro hockey team or a college team?
"There's a permanent ice floor we can put down that you would actually be able to have a concert or basketball game on top of the ice," Rosenblum said.
For that, only time will tell.
