Shane Walton's family describes his death as senseless. They knew he was in bad shape after an early-morning attack on Saturday, but they didn't give up hope he would pull through.

"It's been a whirlwind," Shaun Walton, Shane's uncle, said. "There's no words that can describe the pain."

Walton's grandmother last saw him Friday night talking to his dad. She said they live just two blocks from where he was killed.

The beating happened near 38th and L. Walton was brutally beaten around 4:30 a.m. with a club-like object. His family said they knew he was brain dead on Tuesday, but didn't find out he had died until Wednesday morning. He was pronounced dead Tuesday night at 8:39 p.m.

Walton's family said he functioned at a lower level mentally, adding to the confusion on how this all happened.

"He may be 20, but he only had the mentality of a 12 or 13-year-old. So who can do that," Stephanie Walton-Tadlock, Shane's aunt, asked.

The family doesn't know what he was doing out at 4:30 in the morning. It wasn't like him to wander around.

Walton's grandmother said he was kindhearted. He loved making friends and being accepted. Walton was an organ donor and his family takes comfort in knowing he'll now save lives.

"He's a gentle loving person, very loving person," Norma Jean Burgess, Shane's grandmother, said. "A gentle person. A sweetheart."

Walton's family hopes finding his attackers will bring a little bit of closure.

"This attack cost him his life and he will always be remembered and loved by so many," Shaun Walton said.

Police still don't have any suspects, but they think they're looking for 2 or 3 people. They say a red pickup truck with a ladder rack was possibly involved. If you have any information, call 911.
