A car crashes in to an apartment building, breaking open a gas line.  Officials said after the car hit the side of the building, the driver took off in the car.

Fire officials said the car crashed into the side of the building and cracked the gas meter causing a gas leak.  It happened around 1:00 Thursday morning near SW 1st and A streets.  Fire crews quickly evacuated the tenants from the building.  Officials said all of those tenants are okay.

Witnesses noticed a strong smell of gas in the area. "Once we got on location we found that there was in fact quit a bit of gas in the area.  Crews were able to quickly isolate the leak and stop the gas from flowing," Battalion Chief Eric Jones said.  After fire crews got the leak stopped, Black Hills Energy came out to fix the meter.
