A man is in critical condition in the hospital after his hand was amputated by a train early Saturday morning.

It happened around 2 a.m. at the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad near 31st and O Streets.

Police say the train was stationary when the 23-year-old man reached under the train to get his dog. The train then moved and dragged the man 400 feet.

Police say his hand was amputated and his left foot has significant damage.

Police are unable to identify the man. They say he is in critical condition with non-life threatening injuries.
