Crime rate increases

We remember seeing crime last year; robberies, burglaries, and rapes.

These crimes all saw a boost between 2011 and 2012 in Lincoln.

But Lincoln's Public Safety Director says one sticks out the most.

"I'm a little bit concerned over what's been the trend with robberies in Lincoln. Of all the crimes that's probably the one that concerns me the most," Tom Casady said.

He says robberies have been trending up in the last several years, 15 percent since 2011.

And according to the Lincoln Police Statistics, burglaries were right up there too, with a 17 percent increase.

Sometimes it can be as simple as locking your doors.

"Lots of our burglaries are committed when the perpetrator enters a residence or a building through an open or unlocked door," Casady said.

As for rape cases, there were 10 more in the city in 2012, compared to 2011. Casady says it might not actually be the number of offenses that have gone up.

"I think sometimes when rape is going up, that's an indication of more willingness to report rather than more offenses," he said.

Though some crimes have increased, others such as thefts and auto thefts have gone down.

"Crime in Lincoln is stable," Casady said.
