LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) _ Authorities have arrested a 32-year-old man living in southeast Nebraska on suspicion of raping a 13-year-old girl he met while singing in a local church choir.
Chief Deputy Jeff Bliemeister says Raymundo Perez Cruz was arrested recently. Cruz is charged with first degree sexual assault of a child.
The girl told authorities she met Cruz about a year ago and the two became friends. She says on July 17, he asked to meet her to discuss a mutual friend. The girl says Cruz drove her to Blue Stem Lake near Crete, where he raped her in the backseat of his SUV.
"They had developed a relationship when Mr. Perez had provided her with rides home after choir practice and they had communicated via Facebook in the past," Bliemeister said.
If convicted of first-degree sexual assault of a child, Cruz faces up to life in prison. Court documents say Cruz is in the country illegally. Bliemeister also said Cruz faces deportation.
