LINCOLN - Usually one of the toughest choices for your normal 18-year-old college freshman is what to eat for lunch at the dining hall.
Take those same freshman and stack on the weight of the blackshirt defense. Then ask them to play football in front of 90,000 people full of high expectations.
Two true freshman started for the Husker defense Saturday against Southern Mississippi. It was the first time any true freshmen started for the blackshirts since 2010.
Josh Banderas started at middle linebacker and Nathan Gerry lined up next to him in the linebacking corp as well. The two are roommates and they helped hold Southern Miss to only eight yards rushing in the first half Saturday.
Head Coach Bo Pelini said he had no problem putting the young guns in the lineup. He also said the two won their starting spots in the week of practice.
