Traditionalists will ask, why? Where is all the red? But, like it or not, the Huskers will take Tom Osborne Field on Saturday looking like we've never seen them before.
Now, with athletes wearing alternative black jerseys, fans are being asked to do their part too.
"Hey, UCLA that's a big game, we owe them a big push back. So lets dress it up and do it right," Greg Luedtke said.
Luedtke manages one of the four Husker Authentic stores in Lincoln. The stores, which are run by the athletic department, are carrying special black "Bone-Yard" Husker shirts for the student section and other fans.
Most Nebraska fans remember the 36-30 loss to UCLA last September in Pasadena, but now they're hoping revenge is a dish best served blackened.
"You just kind of hear about it on campus, everyone's like, 'Are you going to the game? Well make sure you wear black,'" UNL student Lucas Keifer said.
Other students are hoping the blackout brings players and fans closer together.
"Gives us even more of a reason to cheer," UNL student Ramsey Jorgensen said.
"I think it's cool, it's like the Sea of Red, but it'll spice it up," Keifer added.
UNL student Sydney Burke was inside the Husker Authentic store on Tuesday searching for her black Husker gear.
"I think it'll pump up the players, they'll see everyone in black and they'll be in their new jerseys. It'll be exciting," she said.
Plenty of official alternative jerseys are still available. For $65, you can buy either #3 or #80. It's a close race, but store officials say Kenny Bell is outselling Taylor Martinez at the moment.
So feel free to shed the red for one Saturday. If you don't have a black shirt yet, there's dozens of designs to choose from before the September 14th showdown.
But, color coordination aside, come 11:00 a.m., it's all about the Big Red.
