In 2012, the last horse crossed the finish line at the old State Fair Park.
But a new racing facility is in the works for Lincoln.
"We went full out and we wanted to put everything into this," says Lincoln Race Course Winner's Circle Sports Bar & Grille general manager, Christy Harris.
The 20,000 square foot facility will have a simulcast wagering parlor and Lincoln's only "indoor" smoking lounge.
Harris says, "We wanted to not only create a facility that was state of the art and quality but allow for the future.
Nebraska's Benevolent & Protective Association bought the land on Denton Road just west of highway 77.
They've paid for the $6 million facility up front.
Hoping it pays off in fundraising efforts for phase two.
Which they're hoping will include a live horse track, barns, and grandstand.
Fundraising will begin soon.
"We've had a lot of interest, but they want to see this facility completed. The excitement and the draw of this facility is going to keep the people interested in it to start donating more," says Harris.
The project doesn't stop there.
Phase three would include a club lounge on the second floor of the simulcast building and a second story on the grandstand.
"I just don't know when," explains Harris, "we will get there and we'll know more within the next year."
Until then, it's just recommended you check out what they'll have to offer.
The bar and grille will open to the public on September 27th.
