Police say family get together at an apartment building went seriously wrong when the older cousin of a toddler suddenly took him.
They say the 13–month–old was reported taken from his home near 46th and Stockwell at around nine Friday morning.
Officials say the toddler's cousin, 20–year–old Nathaniel Gonzalez, was visiting when he started claiming he was the child's father.
Officials say soon after, he grabbed the child and took off.
Neighbors say they heard the mother shouting that someone was trying to take her baby, so they ran outside and tried to help.
"I came out and he was already at his car so there was nothing I could do. All I thought about doing was getting his license plate numbers," says Robert Skaggs who lives nearby.
Gonzalez didn't get very far.
Police got a call just before eleven that the red Chevy Aveo he was driving was in a Target parking lot.
"Officers were able to check the vehicle, there was no on inside the vehicle. Obviously in the front of the Target we assumed that the person responsible and the child were inside," says Sgt. Don Scheinost of the Lincoln Police Department.
Officials say Gonzalez was arrested shortly after inside the store. The toddler was returned to his mother unharmed.
Family members are shocked, and still trying to piece together how and why it all happened.
"I just can't believe that this happened. I mean, this is a shocking thing. I just didn't think that he would be capable of doing this," says the toddler's aunt Prisca Moreira.
Gonzalez is in custody at the Lancaster County Jail, police say he was arrested for Felony Theft and Kidnapping.
