A single mother of two is fighting a big battle, diagnosed with breast cancer for the second time. Now, Crete is rallying behind her.
Jen Barber, 38, is a mother to 17-year-old Josh and 13-year-old Nick.
In 2010, she got a devastating diagnosis, stage three breast cancer. But after 10 months, Barber was cancer-free.
"Jen's spirit is always overwhelmingly positive," her friend, Keri Johnson, said. "She's always a go-getter. She's always positive, she's always fun and has an amazing outlook on life."
Her strength would be tested again.
After experiencing pain, Barber recently went back to the doctor and get the earth shattering news. Her cancer not only came back, it spread and is now stage four.
This time around, Barber has even more people in her corner.
Her friends are throwing a Benefit in Crete to help with medical bills. Barber isn't well enough to make it, but they know the support will mean a lot.
The event is Saturday, October 12 at the Hillside Development building, near Highway 33 and Cardinal Lane. It goes from 5:30 p.m. to midnight.
There will be food, live music and a silent auction with items like a Tom Osborne signed football.
They're asking for a $5 donation.
"The outreach has been incredible and I think and I know that the positive outreach is just a reflection on Jen and her positive spirit on a lot of people," her friend, Dawn Draeger, said.
And like their t-shirts say, "No burden is too heave if everyone lifts."
If you'd like to help but can't make it to the event, you can go to any Pinnacle Bank in Lincoln or Crete and make a donation to the Jen Barber Benefit fund.
