Residents of an apartment building near Omaha are shocked and grief–stricken, after a late night break–in took the life of a neighbor.

"I heard at about midnight, I heard three gunshots and glass breaking," says a woman who lives nearby.

Ralston police say it happened a little before midnight Monday at the Orleans Square Apartments near 84th and L.

They say two armed men forced their way into one of the units and demanded money.

"Both parties were armed with handguns and the suspects are believed to be two Hispanic males," says Ralston Police Chief Ron Murtaugh.

There were two people inside, one was unharmed, but 42–year–old Amiee Kearns was shot and killed.

Those who knew her can't wrap their minds around the tragedy.

"This is a very quiet, it's a suburban apartment. I've been here for 20 years, these people here, they know me," says a neighbor.

Kearns was actually supposed to be in Virginia when this happened. She had signed on as a manager at a food packing plant.

Kearns was scheduled to start Oct. 21st, but her supervisor says she never showed up.

Despite maxing out a $2,000 company credit card she was given, her recruiter Jim Trotter says as her start date neared, she seemed out of touch.

"Communication stopped, it was sporadic, her voicemail was always full. I would try to run her down on Facebook or email."

Police continue to search for the two suspects, who again, they believe to be two Hispanic males driving a blue boxy car, possibly a Lincoln Continental.

Any information about this should be reported to Ralston Police at 402-331-1786.
