Authorities are investigating the deaths of an elderly couple found in their home near McCool Junction.
Charles and Juanita Bailey were found in their bedroom around 10 a.m. Saturday.
Officials say an accidental fire might be to blame. The York County Attorney's office reports that local firefighters found a small fire burning in the hallway of their house when they arrived.
The couple, in their 80s, lived in the private community of Sacks Lake, four miles east of McCool Junction.
Neighbors and others who knew the couple say Charles and Juanita were friendly and well-liked.
Daniel Spearow is the current pastor of United Methodist Church in Stromsburg, where Charles served as pastor for seven years in the 1980s. Spearow says Charles and his wife would come back and visit the church every so often. Spearow says he also assisted Charles with a family baptism.
"Everyone who was a member of the congregation at the time that they served speaks very fondly of them and if they walked through the door there'd be a flock of people moving over to greet them, just excited that they're here," Spearow said.
Spearow says he remembers Charles and Juanita as kind-hearted "down home" people who were always eager to share stories.
"The reaction, as much as any, was first disbelief and second a profound sense of loss as if a piece of the church was gone," Spearow said.
Memorial services will be held at the Stromsburg United Methodist Church Wednesday Nov. 4 at 2 p.m.
