The Center for People in Need is providing thousands of low-income families with Thanksgiving dinners.

Turkey, mashed potatoes, yams, corn: a meal fit for a king. But for some families, putting all that together is a financial struggle.

That's why the Center for People in Need is holding its 10th annual Thanksgiving food drive.

"Without this place, we wouldn't have been able to have a Thanksgiving dinner this year," Stacey Walsh said. "It's really great that they do this, I see a lot people that are really appreciative of the help."

Saturday was the first day of the food drive. Beatty Brasch of the center said more than a thousand families came through, filling their shopping carts with all the essentials for the perfect Thanksgiving dinner.

"We're very happy that we're able to do this and have them have the food that they need for Thanksgiving," Brasch said.

Brasch said the thousands of turkeys, boxes of stuffing, potatoes and other food items have all been provided by the Food Bank of Lincoln.

She said over the duration of the drive, she expects 4,000 families to come through, and estimates that's about 11,000 full stomachs.

One dad said there's no better feeling than being around his family on Thanksgiving.

"I'm thankful to have another Thanksgiving with my family, because if it wasn't for them, I don't know where I would be," Raymond Strozier said.

The food drive will run until Monday. If you're part of a low–income family, you can stop by the Center for People in Need tomorrow from 12 to 4 p.m., or Monday from 4 to 8 p.m.
