An unpleasant odor that made its way through Lincoln and the surrounding areas Tuesday has left people guessing where it came from.
"It smelled like a feed lot," Tim Pratt said.
"It smelled like cow manure," Maureen Jones added.
Scott Holmes of the Lincoln–Lancaster Health Department said he received a complaint call Tuesday about the odor, but said he will not speculate where the smell came from.
Channel 8 Eyewitness News also reached out to the Department of Environmental Quality and Four Corners Health Department in York, which serves four neighboring counties.
Officials there also said they won't speculate.
What's left is a bunch of possibilities. Tuesday's warm temperatures combined with the wind could have pushed the odor from nearby cattle or manure operations into the Lincoln area. The smell could have come from sewage or from excavating dirt for construction purposes.
Regardless of the cause, some people had a good laugh from it.
"Besides this guy, that was my only guess," Matt Glenn said.
"My first guess was you," Tim Pratt said in response to Glenn.
Because the smell is gone, Holmes of the Health Department said he cannot investigate the situation.
"It's gone, so hopefully it doesn't come back," Maureen Jones said.
