Time to lace up your skates; Lincoln's first outdoor ice-skating rink is officially open.
The Railyard Ice Rink located in Lincoln's West Haymarket district opened Saturday morning for the public to enjoy.
"I've been waiting for Lincoln to get an outdoor skate rink since I was a little girl, so I was excited about it," Chalsey Debaere of Lincoln said.
From the skilled and seasoned skaters to the very beginners, people of all ages gave the new 4,200-square-foot rink a try.
Jake Drueke says it's a great addition to the city, especially for the kids.
"This is something to do that's a lot of movement, I just knew it'd be fun," Drueke said.
His two daughters seem to agree.
"They kept telling me over and over, this is fun!"
Organizers say the frigid temperatures may have kept some skaters home Saturday, but expect to see 15,000 people use the facility this season.
Ice rink managers say the goal is to create a unique winter experience in the heart of downtown, and one that doesn't cost much. It's free to skate, $6 for children's skate rentals and $9 for adults.
As for the cold...
"If you don't want to skate, you don't want to be out in the cold, leave the ice for the rest of us," Debaere said.
The rink is open seven days a week through February. For more information, visit skatetheyard.com.
