A Lincoln man is in jail after police say he threw his 6-month-old baby boy.
Lincoln Police and Lincoln Fire and Rescue were called to an apartment complex near Southwest 10th and West A Street just before noon on December 1st.
They say 22–year–old Anthony Souza told responders he was carrying his 6–month–old son when he accidentally tripped, lost his grip and dropped the baby.
Although there were no visible injuries, police say the infant was taken to the hospital for x–rays as a precaution and the results showed several serious injuries.
"Medical staff confirmed that this was not consistent with Anthony Souza's description of the events and this was definitely not caused by an accident," Officer Katie Flood said.
Doctors say x–rays showed the boy had three skull fractures, a brain bleed and two breaks to his arm.
"Through further investigation, we learned that Anthony Souza did not drop the child but actually threw the baby, causing his head to strike a door frame and closet," Officer Flood said.
Police say when it happened, the boy's mother had stepped out to go to a neighbor's apartment.
Police arrested Souza on Friday for felony child abuse. They say they don't know what caused him to throw the baby but don't believe this was the first time he's been abusive.
"Those injuries at the hospital found were in various stages of healing, indicating that this was not an isolated incident and that the child actually has been injured before."
We reached out to the mother of the child to try and get word on the baby's condition but never received a call back.
