A fire destroyed a barn just north of Hickman Monday morning.
Fire crews from Hickman, Firth and Southeast Rural responded to a blaze at Still Waters Ranch around 1:30 a.m.
The ranch owners' daughter, Laura Stueck, woke up to neighbors pounding on the door.
"There was probably flames 10, 15, 20 feet above the building," Stueck said. "It was the scariest thing I've ever seen and I just knew we needed to get the horses safe."
Stueck, who helped establish the ranch with her parents and works as a horse instructor, says she's glad none of the animals were harmed. She says she had to move several of them away from the flames.
Lancaster County Sheriff Terry Wagner says the horse barn is a total loss, estimating $300,000 dollars of damage to the building and equipment inside. Two tack rooms, a feed room, six horse stalls and a bathroom were destroyed.
Fire investigators say an electrical malfunction inside the barn may be to blame.
Still Waters Ranch was founded in 2004 by Arnie, Char and Laura Cole. The 40-acre ranch has more than 20 horses, many of which are used for riding lessons.
