David Nicholson is on a mission this holiday season. He's making sure children in need wake up happy Christmas morning.

When the 67-year-old found out the Center for People in need is short 5,000 gifts for its annual holiday toy drive, he knew he needed to do something.

"I called Deb Daily and said, 'Deb, I need to help,'" Nicholson said.

Deb Daily, the center's director of operations, said in her 26 years of overseeing holiday toy drives, she's never seen this much of a shortage.

She said after totaling the numbers, her heart sank.

"After wiping my tears, I just knew I had to have a plan," Daily said.

That plan would include Nicholson.

Friday, he scouted out the best deals at Toys 'R Us in Lincoln. Dozens of full shopping carts and $1,000 later, the operation was a success.

"This is great fun," Nicholson said. "The only thing that would be much more fun would be to watch the kids' faces when they open them up on Christmas Day. But knowing that they're going to have a Christmas puts a good feeling in my heart."

The Center for People in Need still needs donations. If you would like to help out, you can drop off gifts at the center at 3901 N. 27th Street in Lincoln. The toy drive will be held Saturday, Sunday and Monday, but the center will still take donations through Christmas.
