LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) A state task force is recommending $50 million a year for water-conservation efforts in Nebraska, but there's no commitment yet to specific projects.

The Water Funding Task Force says Nebraska will need to spend the money to ensure a sustainable water supply for drinking, crop irrigation, interstate water compacts and wildlife.

The task force says funding options could include a tax on soft drinks, an excise tax on ethanol, or taxes on fertilizer and bottled water.

Sen. Tom Carlson, the task force chairman, says the task force chose to focus on long-term planning. He says the state has overused its water supply and needs to find ways to preserve it.

The report is due to the Legislature on Friday.
