Millions of Americans will be sending holiday greetings through the mail today.  Officials estimate a 12 percent increase over last year.

Postal officials expect today to be the busiest mailing day of the year.  Three times as many cards and letters will be sent.  The postal service estimates 15 billion cards, packages and letters will pass through post offices during the holiday season.  The good news is you can avoid the crowds.  Postal officials suggest shipping from home using usps.com.  Prices are 11 percent lower than post offices and you can arrange free pick up by your letter carrier.  If you do brave the post office today, there will be extra staff on hand to answer questions and help out.

If you want a card or package to reach your loved ones by Christmas, it's suggested you mail by December 20th for first class mail, the 21st for priority mail and the 23rd for priority mail express.
