At around noon Wednesday, authorities say a semi truck went off the road while driving on Eastbound I-80 near the West O on ramp.  The Nebraska State Patrol says a husband and wife, who drove the U.S. Express truck together, were killed.

State Patrol confirmed Thursday that the woman was sleeping in the cab of the truck while the husband was driving. The couple was from East Canton, Ohio.

Thick black smoke from the fire could be seen from miles away. Officials tried to get her out, but weren't able to.

"They were trying to get her out when the truck started on fire. They were unable to get her out and she died as a result of the fire," NSP Sgt. Tim Salmen said.

Eyewitnesses say they heard an explosion. Once firefighters finally got the flames under control, what was left of the truck was unrecognizable.

"They were hauling extra packages for FedEX, so nothing that was dangerous as far as explosive or chemical, so probably a lot of Christmas presents that aren't going to make it to their destination," Salmen said.

I–80 reopened after two hours and the O street on ramp was reopened on Thursday.

The names of the couple won't be released until relatives are notified.
