Farmers and Merchants Bank has set up a fund for the victims of the house explosion near Firth.  Dan Kadavy and his family lost their home Wednesday after an explosion and fire.  Farmers and Merchants Bank is located in Firth.

A house explosion in Firth Wednesday has left the home in pieces.

Emergency crews responded to an initial call of a house fire near 60th and Apple Streets around 4 p.m. By the time the crews got there, the house was close to gone.

"When we arrived, what you see is what we got," Asst. Chief Doug Doeschot of Firth Fire and Rescue said. "There was some sort of an explosion."

Fire officials said the owner of the home was working in a nearby garage when he heard the explosion. He ran out to see his home in pieces.

"He heard it and came outside and saw his house like this," Doeschot said, referring to the debris behind him.

Fire crews worked since about 4 p.m. to knock down the flames. They're still keeping an eye on some hot spots.

Right now, all officials know is that it was an explosion. They don't know what started it.

Luckily, the family was not inside at the time.

"We don't really know what caused it," Doeschot said. "We know there was an explosion, we just don't know the cause."

For now, the family is staying with friends.

The cause of the explosion is under investigation. Channel 8 Eyewitness News will bring you any new information as it's learned.
