The first of the new year started off on the wrong foot for multiple families in the Belmont neighborhood of Lincoln.

Rebecca Lile said she and her boyfriend came home early Wednesday morning to their basement completely flooded.

"A lot, a lot of water," Lile said. "You still step down there and just soaked in water. It's a sponge. Nasty, dirty sewer everywhere."

A water main break near N. 11th and Butler Streets flooded numerous homes in the area.

Homeowners are fed up because it's not the first time. They said it's happened three times in the past two and a half years.

"It makes me uneasy and really wanting to move out of this neighborhood," Lile said.

Lincoln Water System officials said water main breaks are common in the winter when temperatures are low, or in the summer time, when they rise.

"It's the change from hot to cold, and all the elements," Bill Fish of Lincoln Water System said.

Crews worked to repair the pipe. Homeowners said it's been patched multiple times, but said that's not enough.

This time, they hope the city steps in to take greater action.

"These houses are in an old neighborhood, were built in the fifties," Lile said. "So I think it's time to upgrade something."

Water in the area was turned off about 4 a.m. when the break occurred. Officials said it was restored to the homes around noon.
