New Years Day didn't start out the way Peggy Bojanski planned.

"The smoke alarm went off, thank God it went off, and I opened the door and the house was filled with smoke," she says.

Just after 10:30 Wednesday night, a fire started in her living room, and quickly spread, engulfing her home.

Chief Deputy Jeff Bliemeister of the Lancaster County Sheriff's Office says by the time crews arrived, much of the damage was done.

"Rural fire units from Southwest Rural Fire, Hallum, Clatonia, and Firth attempted to extinguish the fire, but there was quite a bit of damage."

$310,000 worth.

Fire officials say it likely started with the wood stove. The Bojanski's home and car are total losses. Luckily, Peggy, her husband, and her dog got out okay. She's still searching for a few of her cats.

"We've lived here for over 20 years. You work all your life for something and then....it's rather hard," Peggy says.

Peggy and her husband are staying with neighbors for now. She says aside from a sore throat from the smoke, and the shock of it all, she's doing okay.

"I'm not used to not having anything as far as material possessions, but maybe that's all it is, material possessions."
