A devastating morning fire in Plattsmouth destroyed three businesses and shut down Main Street. Fire crews battled the flames for more than seven hours Friday morning and were still out there all afternoon. The cause is still under investigation.
"We could be out here tomorrow yet."
Crews were called to the Quart House Pub at 4th and Main street just before midnight.
"We did an exterior attack, getting everything cooled down and we needed to evacuate of the apartment owners that lived on the second floor," Fire Chief Mike Wilson said.
Chief Wilson said the fire started somewhere inside the bar, and quickly spread to the rest of the building.
"It's a mess is what it is."
Owner of the bar, Mark Morehead, says the reality is still setting in.
"I was up here in about ten minutes and by the time I got here the smoke was overwhelming the inside of the bar," Morehead said.
He says it could mark the end of the pub, which has been around since the '60s.
"It's just sad to see a historic building lost on Main Street of this downtown."
The fire investigator said this block of Main Street from 4th to 5th could be shut down for weeks, that's mainly because of the danger of the damaged building collapsing."
The roof and second floor has already collapsed, destroying two other businesses that shared the building with the pub.
No one was hurt in the big blaze. The fire investigator said damage will total upwards of a million dollars. Making for a touch decision for those business owners affected.
