An evacuation at Sigma Nu fraternity on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's campus has left many brothers wondering what the cause was.

"We got some possible fire alarms that were tampered with," Sgt. Jeff Hohlen of UNL Police said.

UNL Police said the fraternity brothers were evacuated from what they believed was a gas leak. But they said once Lincoln Fire and Rescue inspected the inside, they determined there was no suspicious chemical.

"There was no indication that there was a gas leak or any kind of chemical release," Asst. Chief Todd Duncan of UNL Police said. "However, there were some household cleaning items that had spilled on the floor, and that may have been the source of the odor initially."

A group of Sigma Nu freshman said they're frustrated they can't get back inside to get their belongings and homework.

A bunch of trash inside the house was clearly visible from behind the yellow tape. Duncan said after the fire inspector was done, he also found numerous fire violations inside the house.

UNL police report alcohol was also found inside the fraternity which is against university policy.

"As a result of that, they red tagged this location, and nobody is allowed in this house until that's resolved," Duncan said.

Officials said a fire inspector and city housing will further inspect the house on Tuesday. They will then get a better idea of when the fraternity brothers can return inside.

UPDATE: Fire Inspector Rick Campos told Channel 8 Eyewitness News that he found a high number of fire and housing violations that need to be taken care of before the residents can move back in. He estimates it will take at least a week.

Campos also said the liquid found on the floor consisted of common household chemicals.

Sigma Nu fraternity at UNL was evacuated around 1 p.m. Sunday after a chemical leak.

Lincoln Fire & Rescue were called to the fraternity at 625 N. 16th Street after a fire alarm sounded. Fire officials say when crews arrived the alarm was off and there was no smoke or fire, but they found liquid on the floor and a strong odor.

LFR, Lincoln Police and UNL Police were on the scene, but officials aren't releasing much more information at this time.

The investigation is being turned over to the Fire Inspector, Health Inspector, and UNL Police Dept.
