OMAHA - Senior forward Doug McDermott has been named BIG EAST Player of the Week for the sixth time this season after leading Creighton to a 63-60 win over St. John's last Tuesday.
In addition, McDermott was named ESPN.com National Player of the Week for the second time this year (also Nov. 18). McDermott had already been named CBSSports.com National Player of the Week earlier this season on Jan. 6 and 13, NBCSports.com National Player of the Week on Jan. 13 and USBWA National Player of the Week on Jan. 14.
McDermott had 39 points, six rebounds and two assists, including a game-winning three-pointer with 2.8 seconds left, in Creighton's only game of the week.
McDermott sank 15-of-26 shots from the floor, including 5-of-9 three-point shots, and was also 4-for-5 at the line. McDermott had 12 early points as Creighton bolted to a 17-8 lead on the Red Storm and never trailed all night. He had 20 of CU's 29 points in the first half, then added his team's first eight of the second half to momentarily take a 28-27 lead on St. John's all by himself.
After St. John's rallied from an 18-point deficit to tie the game, McDermott gave CU a lead with 1:03 left with a left-handed floater. Following two tying free throws from the Red Storm with 11.1 left, McDermott drained an open three-pointer from the top of the key to provide the game's final points.
During the night, McDermott moved from 21st to 18th in NCAA history and now owns 2,741 career points.
The 39 points was a season-high for the nation's second-leading scorer, the most by any BIG EAST player in two seasons, and the most by a BIG EAST opponent against St. John's since Allen Iverson in 1996.
Including his six honors this season, McDermott has now been named BIG EAST or Missouri Valley Conference Freshman or Player of the Week 26 times in 61 weeks as a collegian.
Creighton (18-3, 8-1 BIG EAST) plays a pair of games this week, beginning with Friday's 8:07 p.m. home contest vs. DePaul.
The Creighton Men's Basketball team earned season-best rankings in both the Associated Press and USA Today coaches polls released on Monday. The Bluejays are 12th in both polls, up eight spots in both polls.
Creighton (18-3, 8-1 BIG EAST) made the second-largest leap in this week's AP poll, trailing only the 10-spot improvement for current No. 15, Texas. The No. 12 ranking is the highest Creighton has been in the AP poll since being tabbed No. 12 on January 14, 2013
In the USA Today Coaches poll, Creighton tied No. 7 Cincinnati for the nation's biggest jump. It is the seventh week this season (and fifth straight) that Bluejays have been ranked by the coaches, and No. 12 is the best mark for the Bluejays since being 12th on January 21st, 2013.
With today's inclusion, Creighton has now been ranked in the top-25 of the AP poll in 33 of Greg McDermott's 71 weeks at the helm over the past four seasons.
Both polls had heavy upheaval after a week filled with upsets. Sixteen of the Top-25 teams from a week ago lost at least once, and four of those teams lost twice.
Creighton also jumped two spots to No. 8 in the official NCAA RPI that was released on Monday.
Creighton plays a pair of games this week, beginning with Friday's 8:07 pm home contest vs. DePaul that will air on FOX Sports 1.
