After seven decades of marriage, Ken and Lillian Martin say their love is as strong as ever. Turns out, their secret is pretty simple.
The couple was crowned Lexington Assisted Living's 'Sweetheart King and Queen' on Valentine's Day.
"I don't feel right if I'm somewhere and she's not close by," Ken said.
Ken and Lillian met back in 1940 in the town of Bartlett, Neb.
"If we ever did anything special we had to go to another town," Lillian said with a laugh.
She remembers their first dates as being a bit crowded.
"If we wanted to go to a movie we had to take the four sisters too, so we were well chaperoned," Lillian said.
Ken was a high school student and Lillian taught grade school. Ken says he would do whatever he could to spend any extra minutes with his crush.
"I would walk to school and I got so I timed it so about the time she'd be going to school too we'd get to visit a few minutes," Ken said.
A few years later, they were married.
"It wasn't any surprise to me really, we just seemed to click," Lillian said.
Now, nearly 70 years, 5 children, and more than 50 grandchildren and great grandchildren later, the couple says the secret to their marriage isn't complicated; it's about compromise.
"Nobody's perfect, be willing to forgive, forget and move on," Ken said.
Selflessness, understanding and above all love is what the Martins say have kept them together for so long.
"In the vows you say from now and forever and I intend to do that," Ken said.
