Nebraska Softball Splits Saturday Games

Posted: Updated:

Nebraska Lost its first of two games Saturday at the Hilton Houston Plaza Classic. Here are the two separate game stories courtesy of Nebraska Athletics:

Houston - Emily Lockman tossed her second straight shutout to lead the eighth-ranked Nebraska softball team to a 2-0 victory over Sam Houston State on Saturday.

Lockman, a sophomore right-hander from Corona, Calif., picked up her third shutout overall in four starts this season. She stretched her scoreless streak to 19.1 innings while improving to 3-1 on the year. In a four-hit effort, Lockman allowed only four base runners, and the Bearkats got only one runner to third base in the game.

Offensively, freshman MJ Knighten went 2-for-3 and scored one of Nebraska's two runs. Sophomore Hailey Decker was 1-for-2 with a double, an RBI and a run scored. The Huskers (6-2), produced seven hits in the victory. Senior Taylor Edwards singled to extend her hitting streak to 11 games, dating back to the 2013 season.

After stranding a leadoff runner in each of the first three innings, the Huskers finally converted in the bottom of the fourth. Decker began the frame with a double and moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt from freshman Austen Urness. Junior Mattie Fowler then lined an RBI single to right field to give Nebraska a 1-0 lead.

Sam Houston State got its first runner to second base in the top of the fifth, when the Bearkats had runners at first and second with one out. But Lockman retired the next two hitters to escape the jam.

In the bottom of the frame, Knighten led off an inning with a single for the second time in the game. Sophomore Kiki Stokes followed with an infield single before Taylor Edwards walked with one out to load the bases. Decker then doubled Nebraska's lead with a sacrifice fly to right that brought Knighten home with the Huskers' second run.

Haley Baros (0-1) took the loss for Sam Houston State, which fell to 1-3 on the year. Baros allowed two runs on six hits in 5.0 innings.

Nebraska wraps up play at the Hilton Houston Plaza Classic on Sunday at 9 a.m. with a rematch against Sam Houston State.

Houston - It was a frustrating day at the plate for the eighth-ranked Nebraska softball team on Saturday afternoon, as the Huskers were shut out in a 1-0 loss to Stephen F. Austin.

Nebraska out-hit the Ladyjacks 6-2, but an error accounted for the game's lone run.

Stephen F. Austin plated the only run in the bottom of the third without recording a hit. A leadoff walk, a bunt and a fielder's choice where no out was recorded gave the Ladyjacks runners at the corners with one out. Nebraska then failed to execute a rundown between home and third on a ground ball, as an error on a dropped tag allowed the game's first run to score.

Nebraska was never able to solve SFA ace Carlie Thomas. Thomas worked out of a jam in the first inning, before running into trouble again in the fourth. Senior Taylor Edwards led off the fourth with her second single of the day and sophomore Hailey Decker followed with another single. After a fly out, freshman Austen Urness worked a six-pitch walk to load the bases with one out, but a pair of strikeouts ended the inning.

Nebraska then lined into an inning-ending double play in the fifth and was retired in order in the sixth before missing a final scoring chance in the top of the seventh. In the seventh, Urness led off with a double and moved to third on a single by junior Mattie Fowler. With runners at first and third and no outs, sophomore Alicia Armstrong lined into a double play, before sophomore Dawna Tyson pinch hit and hit a ground ball deep in the hole between second and third. But shortstop Elizabeth Arana made a nice play in the hole and threw Tyson out to end the game.

Thomason (2-2) tossed a six-hit shutout in the victory, striking out five and working around three walks. Senior right-hander Tatum Edwards (3-1) suffered her first loss of the season for Nebraska, which fell to 5-2 on the year. Edwards did not allow an earned run in 3.0 innings of work, surrendering just one hit and striking out four. Sophomore right-hander Emily Lockman pitched 4.0 shutout innings of relief, allowing only hit and posting five strikeouts.

Taylor Edwards led the offensive effort with a 2-for-3 effort. Urness was 1-for-2 with a double and a walk.

Nebraska looks to rebound in Saturday's second game against Sam Houston State.
