Thick flames and clouds of smoke had people hovering around 2nd and W. A Streets in Lincoln Saturday.

"The flames just kept getting closer to us and eventually the fireman started yelling at us to get away," Drew Tenbensel, an eyewitness, said.

"The fire is literally moving faster than you can walk," Lincoln Fire & Rescue Battalion Chief Eric Jones said.

A grass fire that started in that area spread to the south at least 500 hundred yards. Officials said the fire spread quickly due to heavy wind gusts, and had to be upgraded to a 3–alarm fire, which is very rare.

Crews from about two–thirds of the fire departments in Lincoln, as well as county rural fire departments, were there knocking down the flames.

Battalion Chief Jones said it was a close call for a few commercial buildings in the area, but crews had the fire contained just in time.

"We saved millions of dollars in structures today, so very proud," Jones said.

Jones said workers in those buildings were evacuated. No one was injured. He said a roofing company's stock pile was damaged, but the building itself wasn't. Traffic on train tracks near S. Folsom and Folsom was stopped.

The battalion chief said although the blaze is contained, crews will continue to monitor hot spots.

"It's going to be difficult to make sure we've got every ash out and with this kind of wind," Jones said. "All it takes is one little ember and we're going again."

The cause of the fire is still under investigation...

There were a number of fires in Lincoln and throughout the county Saturday. Officials said it's a good reminder to always be careful when using hot objects outside in the wind.
