A deadly incident at a Tecumseh grain elevator has left friends and family members holding onto memories of 63–year–old John Bennett of Greenwood.

"Gray beard, always has a ball cap and glasses," Jerry Corey, one of Bennett's long-time work friends said.

"Smiling, that was John," Ann, Jerry's wife, added.

Bennett worked for the Midwest Farmer's Co–op based out of Waverly for a number of years. Friends said he was transporting fuel to a grain elevator in Tecumseh Thursday.

The Johnson County Attorney said Bennett was taken to the hospital from exposure to anhydrous ammonia, a toxic gas. He later died from that exposure.

Back in his hometown, Greenwood, Jerry and Ann Corey are grieving over the tragedy.

"The way he went, that's a bad way he had to go," Ann said.

Ann said Bennett would fill up his truck with fuel where she worked in Waverly before heading out. She said it's going to be hard for the work community to no longer see his smile first thing in the morning.

"Every day. They were with him all day long," Ann said. "And it could happen to any one of those guys, and they're a really tight-knit family over there at the co–op. If something happens to one of them, it affects everybody."

Jerry and Ann said it's been difficult for Bennett's family as well. Bennett was also a long–time mechanic, member of Camp Creek Threshers and car enthusiast.

Jerry said he knows the Greenwood community would want everyone to remember john by his charm and jokes.

"He just brought good spirits to people. He was a good person, you know. Wouldn't take anyone for granted."

Services for Bennett as follows:
Visitation: Monday, 2-8 p.m., Roper & Sons Funeral Services, Lincoln, Neb.
Funeral: Tuesday, 10:30 a.m., Cedar Hill Methodist Church, Greenwood, Neb.
