Alzheimer's fundraising could bring celebrity to Lincoln

It's the sixth leading cause of death in the U.S., but unlike other leading causes, it's on the rise and has no cure.

Alzheimer's.

"We're rapidly approaching a time when Alzheimer's is a crisis in America," says Mark Taylor of the Alzheimer's Association.

The disease is getting some more attention these days, thanks in part to funny man Seth Rogen.

He went before the U.S. Senate to speak about the debilitating disease.

His mother–in–law was diagnosed, he's since started Hilarity for Charity, a program that helps families struggling with Alzheimer's.

"That's right. The situation is so dire that it caused me, a lazy, self involved, generally self-medicated man child to start an entire charity organization," he said in front of the U.S. Senate.

Now, Rogen's calling on college students for help, with a fundraising contest.

Whichever school raises the most money for Alzheimer's gets an advanced screening of his new movie "Neighbors," and a visit from Rogen himself.

UNL student Jackson Lauer quickly jumped on board.

"Just seeing how it affects people and the family around us too. It's hard to see it so, we're going to do our best to find a cure," he says.

Jackson's grandmother died from the disease and his aunt is battling it now.

"Seeing my aunt go through it, it's just been so quick. Now, she's slumped over she can hardly talk."

Some Lincoln bars are pitching in too, with special wristband deals Friday and Saturday.

UNL is only about $5,000 away from first place, but Lauer says he won't stop fighting until there's a cure.

The Brass Rail, The Downtown Bar, and The Bar will all offer $2 wristbands on Friday and Saturday (April 4th and 5th) for those 21 and over.

Each wristband will have 5 tabs on them, each good for $1 off a drink. All proceeds will go toward the fundraiser.
