Two sports complexes in the works for Lincoln

Lincoln may be seeing the addition of two new sporting complexes in the near future.

One of them was discussed in front of the Lincoln-Lancaster County Planning Commission Wednesday. The commission decided it met the city's qualifications to be built in the West Haymarket district.

"This is a big step for the sports complex," Michael Cornelius, one of the planning commissioners, said. "It's sort of a smaller step in a longer process."

The $45 million complex would be named Great American Sports Park and would take up about 65 acres near Sun Valley Boulevard and Charleston Street, west of Oak Lake.

It would include 12 synthetic turf softball fields for both youth softball and baseball players, complete with restrooms, concessions and a maintenance building. There would also be an indoor facility, which would be used for basketball, volleyball and possibly soccer.

The project is being developed by the owners of a local construction company, as well as the state director of girls fast–pitch softball and his wife. It would be paid through their own funding, but they are seeking tax–increment financing.

"I think as much as we can, doing things that are in conformance with the comprehensive plan, will ultimately benefit the city," Cornelius said.

Right now, the softball complex is only in the beginning stages. Cornelius said it must be discussed in front of the city council.

A second sports complex is also in the works. Speedway Sporting Village would mainly be for soccer, and would expand 55 acres to the southwest of 9th and Van Dorn Streets. There would be 10 regulation-sized soccer fields and a trampoline park, among other things.

It would also be privately developed.

That complex will be discussed in front of the Planning Commission in two weeks.
