It's something we hope we never have to experience. An active shooter situation while at work, school, a movie theater or anywhere else when we leave our homes. But in today's world, University of Nebraska-Lincoln Police say it's become something we need to be prepared for.

"I think there is not anyway to avoid those thoughts in today's society when there's a new incident it seems like every other month," UNL faculty member Deb Stephens said.

Students and faculty at UNL were able to attend an active shooter awareness training session on campus.

"I'm not fearful but I think about it, like what would I do?" UNL senior Karen Ockander said.

Officer Koan Nissen leads the course several times a year.

He uses the Run, Hide and Fight Model which he says is crucial in the first several minutes if you're ever in that unlikely situation.

"It's just something we have to be prepared for," Officer Nissen said. "You know, we don't have to live paranoid, but we do need to live informed."

Nissen says shootings happen so quickly, that knowing what to do can help save you and others.

If you can, run as soon as you know something is happening.

If there's no time, hide. Turn off the lights, silence your cell phones and barricade the doors. And if it comes down to it, you need to fight back.

"Win. Survive. Do what you need to do to get away, to hide or subdue the person causing the damage. I mean we're coming, but again, nobody cares for you like you," Nissen said.

Another course will be taught in July if you're interested in attending.
