Drought still a concern for eastern Nebraska

The past few days have been a bit wet for Lincoln. Sunday? A half an inch and today Lincoln got 3-tenths of an inch. So far for April, great numbers, a little over three inches. Even with the recent rain showers, Nebraska is still not in the clear.

"Moisture's welcome, but we're going to need this trend to continue all the way through the month of May," Climatologist Al Dutcher said.

Dutcher said Nebraska is in need of some more rain after an abnormally dry winter.

"We had a very dry pattern established pretty much the entire winter period across eastern Nebraska," he said.

That winter almost hit record dryness in this part of the state. Right now, eastern Nebraska is somewhere between abnormally dry and moderate drought conditions. Dutcher said without more rain, it's only going to get dryer.

"Even though we've had a wet April, we haven't even eliminated half of the deficit that most locations occurred during the month of March alone," he said.

Dutcher said Nebraskans shouldn't want too much rain, however, or else it won't be warm or dry enough for crops to grow.

"Although we welcome these normal temperatures, we're going to need to see consistently above normal temperatures to pull active vegetation of growth," he said.
