A former Lincoln man is one of the two Las Vegas police officers who were shot and killed in an ambush at a pizzeria.
Thirty-one-year–old Igor Soldo and fellow officer 41–year–old Alyn Beck were eating at CiCi's Pizza Sunday when two shooters, a husband and wife duo, shot and killed them.
Soldo, a Lincoln Southeast and UNL graduate worked part time as a Lancaster County Corrections officer before moving to Las Vegas in 2006.
"If there was a bad situation going on, you knew you could count on Igor to have your back," Scott Bykerk said. "He'd be there to back you up and he was just a stand up guy, he really was."
The shooting happened Sunday morning around 11:30 at a shopping mall about five miles from the Las Vegas Strip. Witnesses told police the couple shot the officers at point blank range, took their guns and ammunition and then went to a nearby Walmart and killed a third person who tried to intervene.
"I saw their gun in their hand and he just told me to tell the cops that it was a revolution," a witness said.
After a shootout with police at the Walmart, authorities say the woman shot and killed her husband then herself.
The couple has been identified as 31–year–old Jerad Miller and 22–year–old Amanda Miller. Police say the couple has ties to an anti–government movement and by the amount of guns and ammunition, they were prepared for a lengthy gun battle with police.
After learning the news, co–workers of Soldo, past and present are coping with the tragedy.
"It was a tragic event but then when you find out that you actually had worked with and laughed, had memories of one of the officers that was gunned down, it just really hits you hard," Bykerk said.
Soldo came to Lincoln from Bosnia in 1995.
Both officers were married with children. Soldo leaves behind his wife and infant son.
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) A former Lincoln man is one of the two police officers who were shot and killed in an ambush at a Las Vegas restaurant.
Colleen Soldo of Beatrice says her brother-in-law Officer Igor Soldo was a victim of Sunday's shooting. Authorities say a man and a woman ambushed Soldo and another officer as they were eating, fatally shooting them.
Police say the shooters then fled to a Wal-Mart, where they killed another person before killing themselves.
Colleen Soldo says her brother-in-law attended high school in Lincoln and worked as a corrections officer in Lancaster County.
She says he was a "great guy'' who was a good father, husband, brother and officer.
Las Vegas police say the 31-year-old Soldo is survived by a wife and baby.
Police say two suspects shot and killed two officers at a Las Vegas pizza parlor before fatally shooting a person and turning the guns on themselves at a nearby Walmart. One of the officers shot, Igor Soldo, 31, went to Lincoln Southeast High School, according to his brother. He also worked in law enforcement in Nebraska before moving to Nevada.
Las Vegas police spokesman Larry Hadfield says the spree began around 11:30 a.m. Sunday when a man and woman walked into CiCi's Pizza restaurant and shot two officers who were eating lunch.
He says one of the suspects yelled, ``This is a revolution,'' but the motive for the shooting remains under investigation.
Investigators say the two suspects then fled to the Walmart across the street, where they shot a person inside and then killed themselves.
