A man found dead near Beaver Crossing earlier this week has been identified.

Thanks to fingerprint testing and help from the public, the Nebraska State Patrol found that the body belongs to 34-year-old Hai Sinh Nguyen of Lincoln.

The mystery began on Wednesday June 25. A passerby was walking near the Big Blue River just south of Beaver Crossing when they noticed a body lying along the bank around 1 p.m. Investigators couldn't identify that body until Sunday. They say Nguyen was initially identified through fingerprints, but public information on physical characteristics like the man's panther tattoo was also helpful.

In Seward County, neighbors were at a loss.

"To lose a life for no good reason... it's sad," area resident Tony Terrones said.

The State Patrol is calling the incident a homicide. Officials say autopsy reports show Nguyen did not die of natural causes. Deputies are still investigating to determine exactly what happened.

Channel 8 talked to some people who knew Nguyen that didn't want to comment on camera. They say he loved to play basketball, and spent many weekends on the courts at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Anyone with information that could help in the investigation is asked to call the Statewide Crime Stoppers at 1-800-422-1494.
