Residents upset about sidewalk construction leftovers

A north Lincoln neighborhood near 28th and Clinton Streets has been the site of sidewalk repairs for about a month.

Construction at Tomi Storz's home began just last week. She said she's grateful the sidewalk in front of her home has been replaced, but not with the leftovers.

"This is still sitting here," Storz said, referring to a pile of tree limbs in her front yard. "Hasn't been cleaned up."

And it's not just that pile of tree limbs. Storz said shovels and equipment have been left lying on her property and in the street. She said trash like lunch bags, cups and old cigarette packs have also been thrown on her property, and left there for the past week.

"They've used my yard as a junk yard," she said. "And it's left like this everyday, everyday."

Across the street at Regina Thunderhawk's home, there's still a pile of wood. Thunderhawk said it's been there for at least two weeks.

"I can't do all that work," she said. "I don't know who else is having this happen, but I don't think this is the appropriate way to handle things in the community."

Both women said they're worried children who walk by might get hurt.

Storz said she filed a complaint with one of the city council members. Public Works officials told Channel 8 Eyewitness News they've contacted those with the construction company, ordering them to remove the debris. They said they'll follow up Monday.

But Storz is also concerned about the trench in front of her home.

"And we were talking about this area, and I said, 'What are you guys gonna do?'" Storz remembered asking one of the construction workers. "And he said, 'We're not going to fill it.' And I said, 'What?' And he says, 'I suggest you put in a retaining wall.'"

But Public Works officials said Storz shouldn't be responsible for that. They said usually after sidewalks are lowered, like in this case, a slope is built to flatten everything out. That's unless residents request a retaining wall. Then it would come out of the homeowners' pocket.

Public Works officials said it looks like a case of miscommunication. They are aware of the debris situation and will continue to follow up with the construction workers until it's removed.
