One week after falling out of a golf cart, a Gretna man has died.
The Sarpy County Sheriff's Office is investigating a golf cart accident that ultimately took the life of 31-year-old Patrick Jurgensen. He died in the hospital Wednesday night, six days after it happened. Investigators say Jurgensen fell out of the cart as the driver turned onto a residential road.
Incidents like this happen more than you may think, just as 90-year-old Charles Thone, who says he's lucky to be alive.
"I was fortunate, you bet I was and I'm thankful for that," he said.
The former Nebraska governor was seriously injured in a golf cart accident in the Sandhills three years ago.
"We went up a big incline and at the top of the incline was a big blowout and we went into that blowout head first and then the golf cart fell on top of me," Thone said.
The crash shattered his shoulder and led to several other complications that keep Thone in and out of the hospital.
"It also affected my lungs, so I have to have this oxygen 24 hours a day," he said, "changed my life."
Some Lincoln golfers told Channel 8 they're aware of the danger.
"I know of at least four cases where people have been hurt badly, in fact one person was killed," Ken Hake of Lincoln said.
The Consumer Products Safety Commission estimates that each year, 15,000 golf-cart-related injuries send people to the emergency room.
Sarpy County officials are still investigating what happened leading up to Jurgensen's death. The Sheriff's Office is awaiting autopsy and toxicology reports. Nobody has been cited.
