Hail storm causes extra preparation for Wilber's annual Czech Days

It's almost that time of the year again in Wilber—the annual Czech Days festival kicks off next Friday.

"Everybody gets a little bit on nerves and gets antsy because there's so much to do to prepare for it," Scott Havel, owner of Frank's Smokehouse, said.

But this year, that prep is a little more heavy–duty after a hail storm damaged multiple homes and businesses back in June.

"The businesses are trying their hardest and best to get everything done and ready," Havel said. "But it takes time."

Since then, several shops like Frank's Smokehouse have replaced siding and windows. But there's still more work to be done. One business strip downtown had its awnings replaced Thursday.

But despite all the damage, one thing is for certain.

"Had no question that the festival was gonna go on," Brian Florian, manager of Sokal Auditorium, said. "Nothing's gonna be different. We've got everything lined up already. The coolers are full. The pageant's lined up ready to go."

Each year at the festival, hundreds fill Sokal Auditorium to polka dance. Florian and his wife always look forward to volunteering there, and this year is no different for them. It's really no different for most of the town. People like Florian and Havel said they know the town will pull through.

"Czech Days is about the people, and that's the good thing," Havel said. "It's all about people in town and the people that wanna come here and have fun."

Czech Days will run August 1 through August 3.
