Tuesday, August 5th marks the 31st annual National Night Out. Started all the way back in 1984, the night is a chance for businesses, neighborhoods and law enforcement to come together and get to know each other.

One of the evenings events around Lincoln was a block party at the F Street Rec Center. Dozens of families and their kids had a chance to play outside, get their faces painted and meet their local police officers.

"The biggest benefit is the trust," Capt. Mike Woolman said. "They get to know us and they know, if they want, they can come to us and we'll help them out."

There were several other block parties around town, including in the Near South neighborhood and at the parking lot of Pioneers Plaza.
