Richard Pryor Jr. shooting documentary in Lincoln

For Richard Pryor Jr., it's the untold story of one of the greatest comedians of all time, and his son.

"I remember being able to go up on stage and introduce him,"  he reflected. "And just to hear the crowd."

Pryor Jr. and a production crew are in Lincoln this week filming parts for an upcoming documentary about he and his father.

Comedy Central ranked Richard Pryor as the greatest stand-up comedian of all time.

"When you have a parent who's in the public eye, everything is scrutinized," he said. "In my father's life and in my life, the negative things you hear about, the positive things you don't."

So why Lincoln?

Pryor Jr. and director Lonnie Senstock say it's the perfect place for Pryor, who grew up in Peoria, Ill., and for Senstock who is from Lincoln.

"It still provides the Midwestern backdrop," Senstock said. "It's a mess in New York City. Here, we can have the same aesthetics, but relax."

The lives of father and son paralleled each other, Pryor Jr. says.

"We were both molested when we were younger. We needed an outlet, generally that was drugs and alcohol."

A Navy veteran and recovering addict, Pryor Jr. now spends most of his time as a singer and stage actor in New York City. For the time being, as he reflects in front of a camera, he's enjoying the quaintness of Lincoln.

Pryor Jr. says his main goals are to give a truthful account of his families legacy, and serve as an inspiration to youth who are going through substance abuse problems.
