DAVID CITY, Neb. (AP) _ An eastern Nebraska sheriff has died several days after having a heart attack. Butler County Attorney Julie Reiter said Wednesday that Sheriff Mark Hecker died Tuesday at age 53 at an Omaha hospital. He had suffered a heart attack on Friday.

Hecker had served as Butler County Sheriff since first winning election to the job in 1998. Reiter says Hecker was an intelligent, thorough and professional sheriff who ran his department well. And Reiter says she will remember Hecker as a loyal friend who was always willing to help when asked.

Hecker was the father of five adult daughters. Reiter says he was a proud father and grandfather who made family a priority. Funeral arrangements were still pending Wednesday morning.
